Hockey India has unveiled the Indian U-18 squads for Men’s and Women’s for the upcoming bilateral series against Australia, a key preparatory assignment scheduled to be held in Bhopal from May 15 to 20, 2026.

With the U-18 Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan, just around the corner, this four-match series is positioned as a decisive testing ground for India’s next generation of hockey talent. The squads, trimmed to 24 players each following an intensive national coaching camp, reflect a deliberate selection strategy focused on match readiness, adaptability, and tactical awareness. From an initial pool of 42 probables, players were evaluated across multiple parameters including fitness benchmarks, positional discipline, and in-game decision-making a process aimed at ensuring that only those capable of handling international pressure make the final cut.

For the men’s team, forward Ketan Kushwaha has been entrusted with the captaincy, while Sweety Kujur will lead the women’s side. Both appointments underline Hockey India’s intent to build leadership continuity within the junior pipeline, particularly with an eye on long-term senior team integration.

The timing of this series is critical. With the U-18 Asia Cup scheduled from May 29 to June 6, the Australia series effectively becomes the final competitive rehearsal before a continental tournament that often serves as a pathway to global junior competitions.

Australia, known for their high-tempo, physically demanding style of hockey, present the ideal opposition. For Indian teams that traditionally rely on skill, structure, and quick ball movement, facing such opposition will test defensive resilience, transition speed, and mental composure under sustained pressure.

Men’s team coach Sardar Singh, a former Indian captain, emphasized the importance of these matches beyond just results. His focus remains on how the squad responds to game situations particularly under fatigue and tactical stress. The exposure to Australian hockey is expected to push players into uncomfortable zones, which is precisely the developmental objective at this stage.

Ketan Kushwaha’s elevation as captain signals trust in his ability to influence play from the front. As a forward, his role extends beyond scoring he will be central to initiating pressing structures and setting the attacking tone. The men’s squad also features a balanced composition, with a strong midfield core including players like Premchand Soy and Varinder Singh, who will be crucial in linking defence and attack.

Defensively, the presence of players such as Ansh Bahutra and Arman Soreng provides structural stability, while multiple goalkeeper options ensure depth in a position that often dictates match outcomes at this level.

On the women’s side, Sweety Kujur’s leadership comes with expectations of tactical maturity. Under the mentorship of former Indian captain Rani, the squad has been shaped with an emphasis on consistency and adaptability. The midfield unit, featuring players like Shruti Kumari and Rashmeen Kaur, will play a critical role in maintaining possession and controlling tempo.

The defensive line, anchored by players such as Sugan Sanga and Nilam Topno, will be tested against Australia’s attacking patterns, while the forward unit, led by Kujur herself, will be expected to convert limited opportunities efficiently.

Hosting the series at the SAI Centre in Bhopal adds another layer of significance. The venue has increasingly become a hub for Indian hockey development, offering high-quality infrastructure and a controlled environment for both training and competition. Playing at home also allows the Indian teams to simulate tournament-like conditions while benefiting from familiar surroundings. However, the expectation will be to replicate this performance consistency when they transition to international venues in Japan later this month.

While the immediate objective is to fine-tune combinations and build momentum ahead of the Asia Cup, the broader focus remains on long-term athlete development. Junior-level international exposure is a critical component in bridging the gap between domestic and elite global hockey. The inclusion of multiple players across positions suggests that team management is also assessing bench strength and rotational flexibility factors that become crucial in tournament settings with congested schedules.

For both squads, the Australia series will serve as a benchmark. It will highlight not just strengths, but also areas requiring immediate correction whether in defensive organisation, penalty corner efficiency, or game management in tight situations. As India’s U-18 teams prepare to step onto the field in Bhopal, the focus will be clear: execute plans, absorb pressure, and evolve as a unit. The results will matter, but more importantly, so will the process.

With the Asia Cup looming, these four matches represent the final opportunity to align strategy with execution. For a generation of players on the cusp of bigger stages, this series is not just preparation it is a defining moment in their development trajectory.
