Indian Women’s Hockey Team Stuns Australia in Shootout to Level Friendly Series

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team produced a spirited comeback performance to defeat Australia women's national field hockey team in a shootout and level the four-match friendly series 1-1 at the Perth Hockey Stadium on Wednesday.
After trailing for most of the contest, India fought back in the final quarter through an important equaliser from Sushila Chanu before prevailing 4-2 in the shootout against the hosts. The victory marked a major response from the Indian side after narrowly losing the opening match of the series and once again highlighted the team’s growing resilience against elite opposition away from home.
The match began at a high intensity, with both teams looking eager to attack early. Australia, playing in home conditions, initially looked slightly sharper during transitions and managed to break through in the first quarter. Olivia Downes gave the hosts the lead in the 10th minute after capitalising on an attacking move inside the Indian circle.
The goal handed Australia early momentum, and for a brief period the hosts looked in control. However, India gradually settled into the contest and began increasing pressure through structured possession and repeated penalty corner opportunities.
One of the encouraging signs for India throughout the match was their ability to consistently push Australia deep into defensive situations. The visitors started earning penalty corners regularly and created several dangerous moments inside the circle. While Australia defended strongly for long phases, India’s attacking pressure kept building as the game progressed.
The midfield also looked significantly more composed compared to the opening match of the series, allowing India to sustain attacks better and maintain territorial control for longer periods. Despite that dominance, the equaliser remained elusive for much of the game.
Australia’s defensive structure held firm under pressure, frustrating India repeatedly through the second and third quarters.
But India continued pushing forward.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 46th minute. Veteran midfielder Sushila Chanu stepped up with a crucial goal in the final quarter to bring India level at 1-1 and completely shift the momentum of the contest. The equaliser was fully deserved considering India’s attacking intent and pressure throughout the second half.
More importantly, it reflected the team’s improved mentality under pressure. Against top teams like Australia, India have sometimes struggled historically to maintain composure after conceding early goals. But in Perth, the visitors remained patient, organised and disciplined throughout the comeback effort.
With the scores level after regulation time, the contest moved into a shootout. India handled the pressure brilliantly.
The visitors converted four of their attempts through Navneet Kaur, Ishika Chaudhary, Annu & Rutuja Dadaso Pisal
Australia, meanwhile, could only manage two successful conversions as India sealed an impressive 4-2 shootout victory. The composure shown during the shootout will particularly please the coaching staff because such moments often become decisive during major international tournaments.
This tour remains a crucial preparatory assignment for India ahead of the upcoming FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup. And results like this can significantly boost confidence within the squad.
Australia remain one of the strongest and most physically demanding teams in world hockey, especially at home. Competing evenly against them and eventually defeating them represents a strong indicator of India’s growing competitiveness internationally. The victory also reflects the positive work being done under the current setup, particularly in improving India’s defensive organisation and ability to handle high-pressure phases against elite opponents.
Another encouraging aspect for India has been the contribution from experienced players. Sushila Chanu’s equaliser, Navneet Kaur’s composure and the overall leadership shown across the squad underline the importance of senior players guiding a relatively evolving team structure.
At the same time, younger players continue gaining valuable exposure against top-quality international opposition.
This balance between experience and youth remains critical for India as preparations intensify for bigger tournaments ahead.
With the series now tied at 1-1, the remaining two matches suddenly become extremely significant. India will enter the third game with far greater confidence after proving they can not only compete with Australia but also finish strongly under pressure. The Australians, meanwhile, will likely respond aggressively after allowing the second match to slip away despite leading for long periods.
That sets up an exciting contest in Perth on Friday. For India, however, the bigger takeaway goes beyond just the result.
The team showed resilience, tactical discipline and mental strength against one of world hockey’s strongest nations exactly the kind of qualities needed if India are to consistently challenge the top teams globally.
