The final weekend of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season will see Bengaluru FC travel to Chennai for a southern derby clash against Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday evening.

While the fixture may not carry playoff implications, it still arrives with contrasting motivations for both sides. Bengaluru FC are aiming to close the campaign with momentum under head coach Pep Muñoz, while Chennaiyin FC will hope to give their home supporters something positive after a difficult season.

The two teams enter the fixture from very different positions on the table. Chennaiyin FC currently sit in 13th place with nine points, just six clear of relegation-threatened Mohammedan SC. The Marina Machans have struggled for consistency throughout the season and have particularly found home form difficult to establish.

Their only home win of the campaign came on April 17 against SC Delhi, courtesy of an early Farukh Choudhary goal. Since then, results have remained disappointing, leaving Clifford Miranda’s side searching for a stronger finish to the season. Bengaluru FC, meanwhile, arrive in Chennai after an important 1-0 victory over Jamshedpur FC away from home a result that handed the Red Miners their first home defeat of the season.

That performance continued Bengaluru’s strong away form, which has quietly become one of the defining aspects of their campaign. Since their defeat to Kerala Blasters on April 11, the Blues have remained unbeaten and currently stand as the league’s best-performing away side.

The victory against Jamshedpur FC was also personally significant for Bengaluru FC head coach Pep Muñoz, who secured his first win in the Indian Super League. Since taking charge, Muñoz has focused heavily on implementing a clearer tactical structure and improving the team’s control in possession phases. While results have taken time to stabilise, recent performances suggest the players are increasingly adapting to his ideas.

Ahead of the Chennaiyin clash, the Spaniard expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress and intensity in training. Muñoz emphasised that the group has responded positively to the tactical framework being introduced and insisted the objective remains to finish the season strongly with another away victory.

His comments reflect a coach attempting to establish long-term foundations rather than merely chasing short-term results.

Midfielder Sirojiddin Kuziev echoed the manager’s confidence, highlighting the squad’s positive atmosphere following the win in Jamshedpur. Bengaluru’s recent performances have shown improved defensive organisation and better balance in transitions. While the attack has not always been prolific, the team has looked increasingly compact without the ball.

The growing stability has been especially evident away from home, where Bengaluru have shown greater composure in difficult environments. Against Chennaiyin, the Blues will likely look to dominate midfield control while using width and transitions to exploit spaces behind the hosts’ defensive line.

Bengaluru FC could also receive a timely squad boost with Nikhil Poojary expected to return to the matchday squad. According to Muñoz, the defender successfully completed a full training session and could be available if he comes through the final session without complications. Poojary’s potential return adds both experience and versatility to Bengaluru’s setup, particularly in wide defensive areas where his pace and work rate provide tactical flexibility.

For Chennaiyin FC, the match represents one final opportunity to end a disappointing season on a positive note. Clifford Miranda’s side has shown flashes of competitiveness during the campaign but has struggled to sustain performances across full matches. Defensive lapses and inconsistency in attack have repeatedly cost them points.

Playing at home, however, may offer additional motivation. With this being their final fixture of the season, Chennaiyin will be eager to reward supporters with a strong performance against one of their southern rivals.

Farukh Choudhary remains one of the key attacking outlets, while the midfield will need to manage Bengaluru’s pressing structure effectively if the hosts are to control the game.

Although neither side enters the game under direct pressure for playoff qualification, the match still carries significance heading into the off-season. For Bengaluru FC, another strong away performance would reinforce the tactical progress made under Pep Muñoz and provide optimism ahead of next season. For Chennaiyin FC, the contest offers an opportunity to salvage momentum and perhaps begin rebuilding confidence after a difficult campaign.

More broadly, southern derby fixtures continue to hold emotional and competitive value within Indian football, regardless of league position.

As the ISL 2025-26 season approaches its conclusion, both clubs will look to ensure they finish with purpose when they meet under the Chennai evening sky on Saturday.
