The wait is over, and history is about to unfold. On January 12, 2025, the inaugural edition of the Women’s Hockey India League (Women HIL) will kick off, marking a groundbreaking moment for women’s hockey.

Over two electrifying weeks, the league will shine a well-deserved spotlight on the exceptional talent that Indian and global women’s hockey has to offer.

Organized by Hockey India, the WHIL is more than just a tournament it’s a bold statement, a beacon of progress, and a catalyst for change. Following the successful revival of the men’s Hockey India League, this women’s edition is poised to redefine the game, ignite passion in young hearts, and pave the way for a brighter future for women athletes.

A Stage Set for Excellence

Four franchise teams Delhi SG Pipers, Odisha Warriors, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, and Soorma Hockey Club will battle it out on the field, with two more teams joining the fray next season.

Fans are in for a treat as Indian stalwarts like Savita Punia, Salima Tete, Navneet Kaur, and Udita join forces with global superstars such as Yibbi Jansen, Delfina Merino, Charlotte Englebert, and Eva de Goede.
The blend of talent, skill, and cultural diversity promises hockey at its finest.

“This league is more than just matches it’s a platform to inspire and create role models,” said Navneet Kaur, captain of Delhi SG Pipers.

WHIL isn’t just about scoring goals; it’s about creating opportunities.

By giving women hockey players a professional stage, it seeks to bridge the gender gap in sports, empower athletes financially, and build a global fanbase for women’s hockey. “This is an ideal platform for youngsters to learn and grow,” said Udita, captain of the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers.

The action will unfold in Ranchi and Rourkela, cities where hockey runs deep in the veins of the people.

The Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Hockey Stadium in Ranchi is buzzing with excitement as it gears up to host the opening clash between Delhi SG Pipers and Odisha Warriors.

Fans can also look forward to a cultural extravaganza during the opening ceremony, with local folklore performances setting the tone for the thrilling matches to come.

The Players Speak

There’s an unmistakable sense of anticipation among the players.

Salima Tete, co-captain of Soorma Hockey Club, expressed her excitement: “We aim to inspire the next generation by showcasing world-class hockey. The love for the sport in Jharkhand is incredible, and I urge everyone to come and support us.”

Echoing her sentiments, co-captain Savita said, “The men’s HIL transformed their game, and now it’s our turn. Sharing spaces with the world’s best players will elevate Indian hockey to new heights.”

Neha Goyal, captain of Odisha Warriors, highlighted the league’s potential to provide financial stability to players and inspire youngsters to dream bigger. “HIL makes hockey a viable career option. It’s a game-changer,” she said.
