Sumit Nagal’s consistent and breakthrough achievements this year have secured him a coveted spot in the main draw of the prestigious Roland Garros Grand Slam.
Preparing to make his debut on the iconic Parisian clay, Nagal’s meteoric rise to a career-high ranking of 80 cemented his place in the main draw.
This also ensures that he becomes the first Indian since Prajnesh Gunneswaran (2019) to appear in the men’s single draw at the French Open.
Sumit’s clay court season produced mixed results. He has demonstrated his tenacity and competence against top-seeded opponents. He played a hard-fought three-set match in the Grand Prix Hassan II before losing to fourth seed Lorenzo Sonego.
His outstanding performance at the ATP 1000 Monte-Carlo Masters, where he advanced to the round of 32 by defeating Matteo Arnaldi , and won a set against Holger Rune, potentially pulling off a big upset.
This was followed by successive first-round exits at the Bordeaux Challenger and the Geneva Open.
What can we expect at Roland Garros?
The official tournament draws will be released on Thursday, May 23, 2024. It is highly likely that Nagal will face a higher-ranked opponent in his first-round clash.
Sumit had a historic run at the Australian Open Grand Slam, and it is not unreasonable to expect him to replicate that performance in the second slam of the year. He has a track record of defeating higher-seeded opponents and giving them a run for their money.
Aside from his singles contention, Sumit is partnering Sebastian Ofner in men’s doubles at the fourth alternate.
The opening round action begins on May 26th, 2024, and fans believe that this debut will pave the way for future success on the global tennis scene
