In what is undoubtedly the biggest upset of the YONEX Swiss Open 2025 so far, India’s Sankar Subramanian produced a sensational performance to knock out World No. 2 Anders Antonsen of Denmark.

The Junior World Championship silver medalist defeated the Danish star in three games 18-21, 21-12, 21-5 to book his place in the quarterfinals of the Super 300 tournament.

A Victory to Remember

Facing one of the most consistent and experienced players on the BWF World Tour, Sankar Muthusamy showed nerves of steel. He started on the back foot, losing the first game 18-21, but bounced back in style with a dominant 21-12 win in the second. The third game was nothing short of a demolition, as Sankar raced to a stunning 21-5 victory, leaving Antonsen shell-shocked.

This victory marks the biggest win of Sankar’s career and serves as a strong statement from the young Indian shuttler. He now advances to the quarterfinals, where he will face Christo Popov of France.

While Srikanth Kidambi and Priyanshu Rajawat fell short in their respective matches, Sankar’s victory has kept India’s hopes alive in the men’s singles category.

• Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand (India) bt. Hubsch/Lehmann (Germany) 21-12, 21-8

• Han Qian Xi (China) bt. Isharani Baruah (India) 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 (63 minutes)

Young Indian shuttler Isharani Baruah fought valiantly against China’s Han Qian Xi, pushing the match to a deciding game. Despite her strong resistance, she narrowly lost in an intense battle.

Mixed Doubles (XD)

• Liu Kuang Heng/Jheng Yu Chieh (Chinese Taipei) bt. Sathish Kumar Karunakaran/Aadya Variyath (India) 21-14, 21-16 (33 minutes)

In mixed doubles, India’s Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath were unable to progress further, as they lost to the Chinese Taipei duo of Liu Kuang Heng and Jheng Yu Chieh in straight games.
