The countdown is over.

From November 26 to December 4, 2024, the Men’s Junior Asia Cup returns, bringing together the finest junior men’s hockey teams in Asia for an electrifying tournament.

Hosted in the picturesque city of Muscat, Oman, the stakes are monumental: not just continental glory, but six coveted spots in the expanded FIH Junior Hockey Men’s World Cup 2025, to be held in India with a record 24-team format for the first time ever.

The Pools: A Clash of Titans

The ten teams competing this year have been divided into two pools, each promising intense rivalries and high-octane action:

Pool A: India, Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei, and Thailand
Pool B: Oman (hosts), Pakistan, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and China

Each team will play four pool-stage matches, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, those finishing third and fourth will battle it out in classification matches, and the teams placed last in their respective pools will face off to avoid the wooden spoon.

Adding to the drama, the three medalists will automatically qualify for the World Cup, while India, already assured a berth as hosts, could open the door for the seventh-placed team to secure a spot.

India: A Legacy to Defend

The Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team, the defending champions, has an enviable record in the tournament, having lifted the title four times (2004, 2008, 2015, 2023).

Last year’s dramatic 2-1 win over Pakistan in the final is still fresh in fans’ memories, and the team will be eager to retain their crown.

This time, India will be led by the dynamic duo of Captain Amir Ali and Vice Captain Rohit, under the expert guidance of Head Coach PR Sreejesh.

The team departs from Bengaluru with confidence, bolstered by their recent podium finish at the Sultan of Johor Cup 2024.

Their campaign kicks off against Thailand on November 27, followed by matches against Japan (November 28), Chinese Taipei (November 30), and Korea (December 1).

Securing a top-two finish in Pool A will be the first major hurdle on their path to glory.

Words from the Leaders

Captain Amir Ali exudes a quiet determination:

“As a team, we’ve worked tirelessly to prepare for this tournament. The Men’s Junior Asia Cup is an incredible platform to prove our mettle, and we’re ready to give it everything from the very first whistle. Our focus is to play disciplined, high-quality hockey and aim for nothing less than a place in the final.”

Vice Captain Rohit echoes the sentiment:

“The energy within the team is infectious. Coming off a strong campaign at the Sultan of Johor Cup, we are confident in our abilities. Every match is an opportunity to learn, grow, and showcase what Indian hockey is all about.”

The Bigger Picture: The Road to the World Cup

The Junior Asia Cup 2024 is a critical piece of the puzzle for teams aiming to secure a berth in the FIH Junior Hockey Men’s World Cup 2025. With India as hosts, Europe has already qualified eight teams, while the Americas have sent Argentina, Canada, and Chile.
Asia’s six spots, along with three from Africa and Oceania each, will round out the lineup for this historic tournament.

Fierce Competition Awaits

Pool B promises its own fireworks, with hosts Oman eager to make an impression on home soil, while Pakistan, Malaysia, and China have traditionally been strong contenders.
Expect fierce battles and nail-biting finishes as these teams jostle for supremacy and a shot at the World Cup.

As Muscat prepares to host this festival of youth hockey, the spotlight is firmly on the rising stars of Asia.

Will India maintain their dominance? Can Pakistan or Malaysia spring a surprise? Will the underdogs defy the odds?

One thing is certain: the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2024 is set to deliver hockey at its finest.
