India’s Basketball Quest: The Crucial FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers in Bahrain

After a challenging performance in the February window of the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, the Indian men’s basketball team is set for a crucial second chance in Bahrain.

Despite setbacks against Iran and Qatar in previous round, India managed to secure the third position in Group E, keeping their hopes alive for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from August 5-17, 2025.

Group H Challenges

In the second round of the qualifiers, India (World Rank 88) finds itself in Group H alongside Iraq (World Rank 93) and Bahrain (World Rank 66). This round will be the final opportunity for teams to secure one of the four remaining spots in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025.

With back-to-back losses in the first round, India faces an uphill battle, needing to significantly improve both their offensive and defensive strategies.

Roster Changes and New Additions

The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) has announced a revamped roster for the second round, which will be held in Bahrain from March 19-24. The squad includes:

Backcourt: M Aravind Kumar, Poiyamozhi Baladhaneshwar, Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, Kunwar GurbazSingh Sandhu, Harsh Dagar, Gurvinder Singh
Frontcourt: Muin Bek Hafeez, Pranav Prince, PrincepalSingh, Arvinder Singh Kahlon, Palpreet Singh Brar, Vaishak Manoj
Head Coach: Scott Fleming

Three fresh faces have been introduced to the squad: PalpreetSingh steps in for Amritpal Singh at the center position, bringing his own set of skills to the role. Vaishak Manoj, known for his athletic prowess, takes over from Pratyanshu Tomar on the wing.

Additionally, Gurvinder Singh joins the backcourt, replacing the seasoned Joginder Singh Saharan. These adjustments are designed to infuse the team with a mix of youthful energy and seasoned experience, aiming to create a more dynamic and versatile lineup.

Significant Matches Ahead

India vs Iraq (March 22): Although India boasts a 2-0 record against Iraq in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, Iraq will approach this match with confidence, having achieved two victories in the previous round compared to India’s single win.
Both teams have a lot at stake, with Iraq looking to avenge their 2021 qualification exit at the hands of India, thanks to a buzzer-beater by Bhriguvanshi.
India vs Bahrain (March 23):  Bahrain, benefiting from the home-court advantage, is expected to be the frontrunner in this contest. For India to pose a serious challenge to the hosts, they will need to exhibit a well-coordinated defensive strategy and exceptional performances from their frontcourt players. This encounter could be crucial in shaping India’s prospects in the qualifiers.3

A qualification will offer great visibility and competitive opportunities for the Indian players in Asia.  Conversely, missing out on this chance could prolong India’s quest for a major breakthrough at the top tier.
