25th National Federation Cup senior athletics championship will be held at Kozhikode from April 02 -06, 2022. The competition will be organised in men and women section having 38 events.
AFI president Adille Sumariwalla while releasing the competition calendar had briefed that the event will give our athletes a chance to prepare and qualify for the forthcoming International events like Commonwealth Games in August, Asian games in September and World Championship.
Before coming to this event, athletes had a chance to participate in the Indian Grand Prix series 1 and series 2 which would have worked as warm up event for the Federation Cup. This also would have facilitated athletes to gain form for the event. The IGP has already produced a national record in men’s 3000 meter steeplechase.
The previous edition of Federation Cup 2021 had produced three national records
a) Kamalpreet Kaur in women’s Discuss Throw with a record of 65.06 m
b) M Sreeshankar in men’s long jump with the record of 8.26 m
c) Annu Rani in women’s javelin throw with the record of 63.24 m
A total of 390 athletes are in mens events and 196 for the women events. The maximum number of 50 athletes are there in mens 400 meters. In women section the maximum number of 19 athletes have qualified for 100 M sprint.
Few big names missing are Mohd Anas in 400mtr who had picked up an injury and started training just about a month back. Young Ayush Dabas continues to be missing from events, one wonder what is the reason as he has been part of national camp.
Kamalpreet Kaur also has chosen to skip the meet, although she has already started her season by competing in the IGP events held earlier.
Going by the entry list Jinson Johnson is all set to make a comeback into competitive racing after a long time. He last participated in 2019.
