India’s campaign at the PSA World Squash Championships in Giza witnessed a significant early headline as Veer Chotrani produced one of the standout results of the opening round, defeating compatriot and higher-ranked Abhay Singh in a five-game thriller.

Ranked World No. 45, Chotrani overcame India No. 1 and 25th seed Abhay Singh 3-2 in a tightly contested Round of 64 clash, sealing a place in the second round with a composed and dominant finish. The scoreline 14-12, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-2 reflected not just the fluctuating momentum of the match, but also Chotrani’s ability to reset and execute under pressure. The all-Indian clash carried added significance given the contrasting trajectories of the two players. Abhay Singh entered the tournament as India’s top-ranked men’s singles player and a seeded contender, while Chotrani arrived as an underdog looking to make a statement on the biggest stage in professional squash.

The opening game set the tone for what would be a high-quality contest. Both players matched each other shot for shot, engaging in long rallies and probing for weaknesses. Chotrani edged ahead in the closing stages to take the game 14-12, showcasing early composure. Abhay responded strongly in the next two games. Adjusting his tempo and control, he dictated the rallies more effectively, winning 11-8 and 11-5 to take a 2-1 lead. At that stage, the momentum had clearly shifted in his favour, with Chotrani appearing under pressure.

However, what followed was a decisive turning point.

Trailing 1-2, Chotrani recalibrated his approach. Rather than engaging in extended rallies on Abhay’s terms, he began to vary his shot selection, using angles and tighter lengths to disrupt rhythm. The fourth game saw a more assertive Chotrani. He controlled the pace, forced errors, and maintained scoreboard pressure to level the match at 2-2 with an 11-7 win. More importantly, he regained control of the contest both tactically and psychologically.

By the time the match entered the fifth game, the momentum had swung completely. Chotrani dominated the decider 11-2, a scoreline that underlined the physical and mental gap between the players in the closing stages. His movement remained sharp, his shot execution precise, while Abhay struggled to regain the intensity required to compete. The final game was less a contest and more a statement a clear demonstration of Chotrani’s ability to close out high-pressure matches.

This victory marks one of the most significant wins of Chotrani’s career. The PSA World Championships represent the pinnacle of the sport, featuring the strongest field and highest level of competition. Defeating a seeded compatriot not only advances him into the Round of 32 but also reinforces his growing presence on the international circuit. For a player ranked outside the top 40, such wins are critical in building ranking momentum and confidence.

It also highlights the increasing depth in Indian men’s squash. While Abhay Singh has been leading the charge in recent seasons, performances like this indicate that the gap within the Indian contingent is narrowing, creating healthy internal competition. Chotrani’s reward for this breakthrough victory is a daunting second-round clash against defending world champion and World No. 1 Mostafa Asal.

Asal, one of the most dominant players in modern squash, brings a combination of physicality, intensity, and consistency that has defined his rise to the top. Facing him at the World Championships presents a completely different challenge compared to the opening round.

For Chotrani, the match will test multiple aspects of his game endurance, shot accuracy, and the ability to sustain pressure over extended rallies. Against Asal, any dip in concentration or execution is quickly punished. However, the win over Abhay provides a foundation. It demonstrates that Chotrani can adapt mid-match, manage momentum swings, and finish strongly qualities that will be essential against a top-ranked opponent.

From a broader perspective, the result offers a positive indicator for Indian squash, even in the absence of deep tournament runs in recent years. India has historically produced strong individual performances at the World Championships, with Saurav Ghosal reaching the quarterfinals in 2013 and again in 2018-19. However, consistent breakthroughs at the later stages have remained elusive.

Chotrani’s performance may not yet signal a shift at that level, but it does point towards a competitive second tier of players capable of challenging higher-ranked opponents.

With players like Ramit Tandon and Velavan Senthilkumar also in action, India’s campaign continues with a mix of experience and emerging talent. For Veer Chotrani, the victory over Abhay Singh is more than just progression into the next round it is a statement of intent. It reflects growth, resilience, and the ability to deliver under pressure at the sport’s biggest stage.

Yet, the road ahead is significantly tougher.

Facing the world No. 1 in the next round will require an even higher level of execution. But if the opening round is any indication, Chotrani has already shown that he is capable of rising to the occasion.

The challenge now is to sustain that level  against the very best in the world.
