Lakshya Sen Leads Young Indian Challenge at Malaysia Masters 2026 Amid Withdrawals

India will head into the Malaysia Masters 2026 with a relatively young and experimental squad as several established stars have opted to skip the BWF Super 500 tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
With top names like P. V. Sindhu, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Kidambi Srikanth, Tanisha Crasto, Dhruv Kapila, Ayush Shetty, and Unnati Hooda all absent from the main event, the spotlight now shifts heavily toward Lakshya Sen and a group of emerging Indian shuttlers hoping to make an impression during an important phase of the international season.
The tournament, set to begin at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, arrives during a crucial stretch leading into the World Championships in India later this year and the Asian Games in September.
World No. 11 Lakshya Sen enters the tournament as India’s biggest singles hope. Despite his reputation as one of India’s leading men’s singles players, Malaysia has historically been difficult territory for Lakshya. He has never progressed beyond the second round at either the Malaysia Masters or the higher-level Malaysia Open Super 1000 event.
That makes this edition particularly important from both a confidence and momentum perspective. Lakshya opens against Indonesia’s Mohd. Zaki Ubaidillah, the 2023 Junior World Championships silver medallist. Although still a teenager, Ubaidillah already owns multiple BWF World Tour titles and plays the aggressive, high-speed attacking style commonly associated with Indonesian badminton.
The opening round therefore carries more danger than rankings alone may suggest. If Lakshya advances deep into the tournament, a possible quarterfinal meeting with France’s Christo Popov could await. Interestingly, Popov was scheduled to face India during the Thomas Cup semifinals earlier this year, but Lakshya missed that tie because of an elbow issue that briefly raised concerns about his fitness.
HS Prannoy’s return is another major storyline for India. The veteran remains the only Indian men’s singles player to have won the Malaysia Masters title, achieving the feat in 2023. However, his opening-round draw this year is extremely challenging. Prannoy faces Japan’s Kodai Naraoka, who leads their head-to-head record 6-1. Naraoka’s relentless retrieving ability and physical consistency have historically troubled the Indian.
Still, Prannoy’s experience and ability to raise his level in major events make him one of India’s most dangerous floaters in the draw. India’s men’s singles contingent also includes Kiran George and Tharun Mannepalli, while S Sankar Muthusamy starts from qualification.
The absence of Sindhu and Unnati Hooda has opened a major opportunity for India’s younger women’s singles players. Seventeen-year-old Tanvi Sharma enters as one of the most exciting prospects in the squad. The Junior World Championships silver medallist faces Thailand’s Pitchamon Opatniputh a player she defeated during her impressive run to the US Open final in 2023.
Tanvi’s ability to sustain long rallies and manage physical intensity at senior level remains an area under development, but the Malaysian conditions could suit her attacking instincts. Anmol Kharb also arrives with growing attention after pushing former Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei to the limit at the Thailand Open last week. Despite eventually losing in three games, Anmol’s fearless approach against one of the world’s best players impressed many observers.
She now faces Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt in another difficult opening-round encounter.
Other Indian women in the main draw include:
Devika Sihag
Malvika Bansod
Isharani Baruah
Tanya Hemnath
Meanwhile, Aakarshi Kashyap and Ashmita Chaliha will attempt to qualify for the main draw.
India’s doubles categories continue to feel the impact of injuries and workload management. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have withdrawn after reaching the Thailand Open final last week, while Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand remain sidelined due to ongoing injury recovery.
That leaves Hariharan Amsakarunan and M. R. Arjun as India’s only men’s doubles representatives. The pair face a tough opening-round match against France’s Popov brothers Christo and Toma Junior Popov one of Europe’s strongest doubles combinations. In women’s doubles, the Panda sisters, Rutaparna and Swetaparna, will compete alongside Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam.
Mixed doubles features Rohan Kapoor / Ruthvika Shivani Gadde, Ashith Surya / Amrutha Pramuthesh & Sathwik Reddy Kanapuram / Radhika Sharma The Malaysia Masters marks the beginning of a highly important three-month stretch for Indian badminton.
With the World Championships scheduled in India later this year, performances during this phase could heavily influence momentum and selection decisions. For younger players especially, tournaments like the Malaysia Masters offer a major opportunity to prove they belong consistently at the elite BWF level.
