Kush Maini delivered one of the biggest moments of his racing career on Friday night, clinching pole position for the FIA Formula 2 feature race in Miami after a stunning qualifying performance for ART Grand Prix.

In a fiercely competitive session at the Formula 2 Miami Grand Prix 2026 weekend, the Indian driver produced a brilliant final flying lap of 1:39.888 to edge out Brazilian rookie Rafael Câmara by just 0.033 seconds and secure the second Formula 2 pole position of his career.

The result also marked a significant milestone for Maini, who delivered when the pressure was at its highest during Formula 2’s first-ever visit to Miami. More importantly, this was not a reversed-grid or inherited pole it came through outright pace in a direct qualifying battle against one of the strongest grids in junior motorsport.

For Indian motorsport, it was another major statement from a driver increasingly establishing himself as a genuine contender at the top level of Formula 2. Maini entered the Miami weekend looking to reset momentum after a challenging opening phase of the season and a lengthy two-month gap between race weekends. The break, however, appears to have worked perfectly for the 25-year-old.

From the beginning of practice, the ART Grand Prix driver looked sharp, confident and immediately comfortable around the demanding Miami street circuit. But qualifying in Formula 2 is rarely straightforward, particularly on a street track where traffic, tyre preparation and timing can completely alter outcomes within seconds. The session evolved into a tense battle between Maini and Câmara, with lap times constantly shifting during the final minutes.

As the chequered flag approached, it was Câmara who initially looked set to claim pole after a rapid benchmark lap for Invicta Racing. But Maini responded under immense pressure, extracting maximum performance from his final attempt to go quickest by the narrowest of margins.

Crossing the line, Maini immediately knew it was special.

The timing screens confirmed the breakthrough moments later pole position in Miami.

It may technically be his second career Formula 2 pole, but this one arguably carries greater significance than the first. In the hyper-competitive environment of modern Formula 2, outright qualifying pace often becomes the clearest indicator of a driver’s Formula 1 potential. Teams and scouts place enormous value on drivers capable of producing elite one-lap performances under pressure.

And in Miami, Maini delivered exactly that. The achievement also underlines the progress he has made since joining ART Grand Prix, one of the most successful junior-category teams in motorsport history. ART has developed multiple Formula 1 drivers over the years, and performances like this strengthen Maini’s reputation within the Alpine Academy system.

The Indian driver has often shown flashes of strong racecraft and consistency in Formula 2, but qualifying performances of this level elevate a driver into a different conversation altogether. Miami’s circuit adds another layer to the achievement.

Street circuits are among the toughest environments for young drivers because they demand precision with almost zero margin for error. Every braking point, every kerb and every exit becomes critical. Unlike permanent racing tracks, drivers cannot afford even the slightest overcommitment without risking major consequences.

Maini’s lap combined aggression with control exactly what top-level single-seater racing demands. The significance of the result also extends beyond statistics.

Indian motorsport has long searched for sustained representation at the highest levels of global racing. While several Indian drivers have competed internationally over the years, very few have consistently positioned themselves near the front in Formula 2 the final stepping stone before Formula 1.

Maini’s Miami pole therefore becomes not just a personal milestone, but an important moment for Indian motorsport visibility on the global stage.

The timing could also prove crucial for his season. Formula 2 is notoriously unpredictable, with momentum often shifting rapidly between race weekends. A strong qualifying performance immediately changes the complexion of an entire weekend by placing drivers in position to fight for major points and podiums.

Starting from pole in the feature race gives Maini a massive opportunity to convert pace into results.

However, the challenge is far from over. Formula 2 races are often chaotic, especially on street circuits where safety cars, tyre degradation and strategic variation can completely reshape outcomes. Managing race pace, protecting tyres and handling pressure from drivers behind will now become the key test. Câmara, who missed pole by just 0.033 seconds, will start alongside Maini on the front row and is expected to provide immediate pressure into Turn 1. Several experienced Formula 2 drivers also remain close behind, ensuring there will be no margin for mistakes.

Still, qualifying in Miami has already sent a strong message. After a difficult stretch and months away from racing action, Kush Maini arrived in North America needing a statement performance. Instead of easing himself back into rhythm, he delivered one of the strongest qualifying laps of his Formula 2 career. And on a night where precision mattered more than ever, the Indian driver produced exactly what was required.
