The India Basketball League (IBL) has taken a major step forward in establishing the country’s first fully professional basketball league by announcing its eight foundation cities.

The league is scheduled to tip off in early 2027, marking a historic milestone for basketball in India.

The eight foundation cities are: Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, and Pune. These cities were carefully selected based on their deep-rooted basketball cultures, high levels of player participation, passionate fan bases, and established community networks. Out of these, six cities will compete in the inaugural season, while the remaining two will enter as expansion franchises in subsequent seasons. Fans across India will play a direct role in deciding which six cities feature in Season 1 through engagement initiatives.

The announcement was made during a high-profile event at the BUDx NBA House in New Delhi. NBA legends DeMarcus Cousins, Isiah Thomas, and Vlade Divac joined IBL players on stage, lending significant international prestige and visibility to the launch.

A Decade-Long Vision: From Grassroots to Professional League

Operated by ACG Sports in partnership with the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), the IBL builds upon nearly a decade of sustained investment in the sport. The league was formally announced in 2025 as part of a comprehensive strategy to create a robust, sustainable basketball ecosystem in India.

A key pillar of this development is the state-of-the-art High-Performance Centre (HPC) in Bengaluru, inaugurated shortly after the league announcement. Located at the Lakshyan Academy, the HPC is India’s first dedicated, year-round residential basketball facility. The centre currently houses top Indian players and serves as the primary talent pipeline. It hosts invitational combines, regional tryouts, and elite coaching programs led by international experts. This infrastructure aims to bridge the gap between grassroots development, state-level competitions, and professional play, ultimately preparing athletes for international success at events like the FIBA Asia Cup, Asian Games, and Olympics.

A defining feature of the IBL is its strong emphasis on fan involvement. League officials have positioned supporters as central to decision-making processes, starting with input on the inaugural team selection. This approach seeks to build a community-owned league that resonates deeply with Indian audiences.

The IBL is being developed not merely as a sports competition but as a broad entertainment product. It targets families, youth, and diverse demographics by combining high-level athletic action with engaging off-court experiences. Officials envision synergies with other popular sports, especially cricket, to enhance visibility and create local role models who can inspire the next generation of players.

With India’s massive youth population and growing interest in global sporting formats, basketball is seen as having tremendous untapped market potential. The league aims to capitalize on digital audiences, urban youth culture, and increasing participation at school and college levels.

The involvement of NBA legends at the foundation cities reveal underscores the league’s international connections and credibility. This backing is expected to help attract global talent, sponsorships, and broadcasting partnerships as the league prepares for launch.

Jeremy Loeliger, Commissioner of the IBL (and former NBL Commissioner), has highlighted the importance of systematic, long-term growth. The league plans to blend homegrown talent with experienced international players to ensure competitive balance and high-quality gameplay from the outset.

India has witnessed several earlier attempts at professional or semi-professional basketball leagues, but most were short-lived due to insufficient infrastructure, funding, and ecosystem support. The IBL differentiates itself through its methodical approach: multi-year investment, a dedicated high-performance training hub, alignment with the national federation, and a clear pathway for player development.

This structured model addresses longstanding challenges in Indian basketball, such as limited professional opportunities, inadequate training facilities, and gaps in the talent pipeline.

The launch of the India Basketball League represents far more than the addition of a new professional sports property. It signals a potential shift in India’s sporting landscape, where basketball ,long popular at the recreational level could emerge as a major professional force alongside cricket and other established sports.

With a young population hungry for diverse athletic entertainment and a growing global outlook, the IBL has the ingredients to succeed. Its success will depend on consistent execution, fan support, and the continued development of homegrown talent capable of competing at the highest levels.

As the countdown to 2027 begins, Indian basketball stands at the threshold of a new era, one built on infrastructure, international collaboration, and community passion. The foundation cities announcement is not just a list of venues; it is the starting point for a basketball revolution that could reshape the sport’s future in the world’s most populous nation.
