Punjab FC produced one of their most resilient performances of the season as they held FC Goa to a 1-1 draw despite playing more than half the match with ten men in their Indian Super League, ISL 2025-26 clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday.
The result extended FC Goa’s unbeaten run and lifted them to fourth in the standings with nine points, while Punjab FC, who showed significant defensive grit, moved to eighth with five points. Goa’s Dejan Dražić, who scored the equaliser, was named the Player of the Match.
Punjab’s bright start rewarded
Punjab FC began the contest with intent, controlling possession and applying early pressure, particularly down the flanks. Left-back Muhammed Uvais was instrumental in stretching the Goa defence, delivering a series of dangerous crosses into the box.
The hosts created the first real opportunity in the 15th minute when Dani Ramírez delivered a corner that found Uvais, whose header was comfortably collected by Goa goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari.
Punjab’s positive approach soon paid off in the 27th minute. A well-constructed move from midfield saw Manglenthang Kipgen thread a precise through ball into the path of Nsungusi Jr Effiong. The striker displayed excellent composure, taking a controlled first touch before curling a left-footed strike into the top corner to give Punjab a deserved lead.
With momentum on their side, Punjab continued to push forward. Ramírez tested Tiwari from distance in the 37th minute, while Nsungusi Jr had another attempt shortly after, though it was gathered by the goalkeeper. Kipgen also tried his luck from range but failed to hit the target.

FC Goa found it difficult to establish control during the first half but came close to equalising in stoppage time. Sandesh Jhingan rose to meet a cross from Dražić but headed narrowly wide, while Pol Moreno also missed the target soon after. Punjab nearly conceded an own goal when a defensive header from Uvais struck the woodwork, but the hosts managed to hold on to their advantage going into the break.
Red card changes the contest
The match took a decisive turn early in the second half. Just three minutes after the restart, Punjab FC were reduced to ten men when goalscorer Nsungusi Jr Effiong was shown a straight red card. The dismissal shifted the momentum firmly in Goa’s favour, as they began to exploit the numerical advantage and push higher up the pitch.
Their pressure paid off in the 53rd minute. Brison Fernandes initiated the move with a neat turn in midfield before laying the ball off to Dražić, who struck a precise right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom corner to level the score at 1-1.

With the game now tilted in their favour, FC Goa intensified their attacking efforts. Udanta Singh came close in the 60th minute, heading narrowly over from a corner, while Dražić missed another good opportunity from a free header moments later.
Despite being a man down, Punjab continued to show attacking intent in phases. In the 71st minute, substitute Bede Osuji created an opening for Kipgen inside the box, but the midfielder’s effort lacked power and was comfortably saved by Tiwari. As the match entered its final stages, Goa pushed aggressively for a winner. Mohammad Yasir tested goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh with a header in the 79th minute, but the Punjab custodian reacted well to keep the scores level.
Late attempts from Raynier Fernandes and Dražić failed to find the target, while Punjab’s defensive unit remained compact and disciplined under sustained pressure.
Defensive discipline earns Punjab a point
Punjab FC’s performance in the closing stages reflected strong organisation and determination. Despite being under constant pressure and playing with ten men, they maintained their defensive structure and limited Goa’s clear-cut chances. Arshdeep Singh played a crucial role in goal, confidently dealing with crosses and making key saves, including a final effort from Brison Fernandes in stoppage time.

While FC Goa will view the result as a missed opportunity to capitalise on their numerical advantage, Punjab FC will take significant positives from a performance that showcased both tactical discipline and mental resilience. For head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis, the match highlighted his team’s ability to compete under difficult circumstances, while Goa coach Manolo Márquez will look to address his side’s inability to convert dominance into three points.
In a league where fine margins often define outcomes, this contest stood out as a reminder that resilience and organisation can be just as decisive as attacking flair.
