India enjoyed another strong day at the Yonex Swiss Open Super 300 in Basel as Tharun Mannepalli and the top-seeded men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty progressed to the quarterfinals with impressive victories in their respective matches at the St Jakobshalle arena.

While Tharun produced a composed performance to defeat Malaysia’s Justin Hoh, Satwik and Chirag survived a tense three-game battle against Japan’s Hiroki Okamura and Kyohei Yamashita, eventually sealing the win after saving multiple match points. The results keep India’s hopes alive in both singles and doubles categories as the tournament moves into its decisive stages.

Tharun Mannepalli Continues Impressive Run

Indian men’s singles shuttler Tharun Mannepalli continued his impressive campaign by defeating world No. 38 Justin Hoh of Malaysia in straight games. Tharun secured the victory 21–14, 22–20 in a match that lasted 43 minutes, displaying both attacking aggression and composure under pressure.

The Indian shuttler started strongly in the opening game, controlling the rallies and dictating the pace. His precise shot placement and ability to force errors from his opponent allowed him to build a comfortable lead. Tharun maintained that momentum throughout the game, eventually closing it out 21–14.

The second game proved more challenging as Justin Hoh raised his intensity and attempted to extend the rallies. The Malaysian began to push Tharun deeper into defensive positions and narrowed the gap as the game progressed. Despite the late pressure, Tharun managed to maintain his composure. Although there were a few nervous moments toward the end, he held his nerve during crucial points and eventually sealed the game 22–20 to complete a straight-games victory.

The win sends Tharun into the quarterfinals, where he will face Indonesia’s experienced star Anthony Sinisuka Ginting. While Tharun enters the match with a higher ranking in the draw, Ginting brings extensive experience at the highest level of international badminton, making the upcoming contest a significant test for the Indian shuttler.

Satwik and Chirag Survive Marathon Battle

India’s top men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, seeded first in the tournament, also progressed to the quarterfinals but had to endure a dramatic contest against the Japanese duo of Hiroki Okamura and Kyohei Yamashita. The Indian pair eventually triumphed 21–15, 15–21, 28–26 in a thrilling match that stretched to 74 minutes.

Satwik and Chirag started confidently, dominating the opening game with their trademark attacking play. Their powerful smashes and quick net exchanges put the Japanese pair under pressure, allowing them to secure the first game 21–15. However, Okamura and Yamashita responded strongly in the second game. The Japanese duo increased their defensive resilience and forced longer rallies, disrupting the rhythm of the Indian pair.

As a result, Satwik and Chirag struggled to maintain control and eventually lost the game 15–21, sending the match into a deciding third game.

The final game turned into a dramatic contest filled with momentum swings and intense rallies. Both pairs displayed remarkable determination, with neither side willing to concede easy points. The match eventually reached a tense stage as the score crossed the 20-point mark. Satwik and Chirag found themselves facing multiple match-point situations, but the Indian duo showed tremendous resilience to keep the contest alive.

After surviving six match points, they finally converted their seventh match-point opportunity, winning the decider 28–26 and sealing their place in the quarterfinals.

The victory underlined the pair’s mental strength and ability to perform under extreme pressure.

Quarterfinal Challenges Ahead

In the men’s singles quarterfinal, Tharun Mannepalli will face Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, one of Indonesia’s most accomplished players and a regular contender at major international tournaments. Although Tharun has been in strong form during the tournament, the match against Ginting will likely require an even higher level of performance given the Indonesian’s experience and attacking style.

Meanwhile, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will take on the Danish pair Christian Faust Kjær and Rasmus Kjær in the men’s doubles quarterfinals. The Danish duo have been in good form during the tournament, setting up what promises to be another challenging match for the Indian pair.

While Tharun and Satwik–Chirag advanced to the last eight, it was a disappointing day for some other Indian contenders. The men’s doubles pair Hariharan and Arjun were eliminated after losing to Taiwan’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Lin Bing-Wei in straight games. Similarly, the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto bowed out of the tournament following a defeat to the Chinese duo Gao Jia Xuan and Wu Meng Ying.

In men’s singles, Kiran George also exited the tournament after a three-game loss to Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan.

Despite the mixed results, India remains strongly represented in the tournament through Tharun Mannepalli and the experienced doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag. With the competition entering its final stages, Indian fans will be hoping the duo can continue their momentum and push deeper into the Swiss Open 2026.

Both quarterfinal matches promise exciting contests as the battle for the title intensifies in Basel.
