India began the match with intensity and purpose, displaying their trademark speed and attacking transitions from the opening whistle. Despite Wales attempting to press high and disrupt India’s build-up play, the hosts quickly imposed themselves on the game. The breakthrough arrived early in the 7th minute through Sakshi Rana. India captain Salima Tete initiated the move with a swift run down the right flank before delivering a precise pass into the circle.
Sakshi reacted sharply and unleashed a powerful reverse hit from the edge of the circle that beat the Welsh goalkeeper and gave India a 1–0 lead. The early goal allowed India to dictate the pace of the match, keeping Wales pinned back with quick counterattacks and sharp passing sequences.
India Continue to Apply Pressure
India nearly doubled their advantage soon after the opening goal. Defender Udita came close to scoring from a penalty corner, but her powerful strike was cleared off the line by the Welsh defence. The hosts continued to dominate possession and attacking territory. Their quick transitions forced Wales onto the defensive, while India’s forwards constantly tested the Welsh backline.

Goalkeeper Bichu Devi also played a key role in maintaining India’s control. She produced a timely save in the 25th minute, denying Wales from their first penalty corner opportunity and ensuring the home side kept their narrow lead intact.
Navneet Kaur Doubles the Lead
India’s sustained pressure eventually paid off in the 29th minute. After earning another penalty corner, Navneet Kaur stepped up and delivered a powerful low strike that beat Wales goalkeeper Ffion Horrell, extending India’s lead to 2–0. The goal capped an impressive first-half display from India, who controlled 55 percent of possession and produced 15 circle entries, highlighting their attacking dominance.
Navneet Strikes Again
India continued their aggressive approach after the break, refusing to allow Wales any opportunity to settle into the game. Forward Neha nearly added another goal in the 31st minute with a reverse hit inside the circle, but the Welsh goalkeeper managed to block the attempt.
India soon earned another penalty corner thanks to a skilful run by Sakshi Rana in the 34th minute. Once again, Navneet Kaur proved clinical, converting the opportunity with precision to score her second goal of the match and extend India’s advantage to 3–0.
At that stage, India looked firmly in control of the contest.

Wales managed to respond in the 39th minute through Betsan Thomas, who capitalised on a brief lapse in India’s defensive structure. Finding space inside the circle, Thomas produced a well-taken finish from a tight angle to reduce the deficit to 3–1. The goal offered Wales a brief glimmer of hope heading into the final quarter.
Wales had a chance to further reduce the gap in the 50th minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke. However, captain Elizabeth Bingham failed to convert the opportunity, sending her shot wide of the target and allowing India to retain their two-goal cushion. The miss proved costly as India quickly regained control of the match.
Navneet Completes Hat-Trick
India sealed the victory in the 55th minute when Navneet Kaur completed her hat-trick. Awarded a penalty stroke, Navneet calmly converted the opportunity to score her third goal of the match and take the score to 4–1. Her clinical finishing capped an outstanding individual performance and ensured India closed the match with authority. India had already secured qualification for the semi-finals prior to the match, but the convincing victory ensured they finished top of Pool B.
Across the group stage, the hosts displayed attacking flair, defensive discipline, and tactical consistency, emerging as one of the strongest teams in the tournament. Young players such as Sunelita Toppo and Sakshi Rana have impressed alongside experienced figures like Navneet Kaur, Salima Tete, and Lalremsiami, giving India a well-balanced squad heading into the knockout stages.
India will now face Italy in the semi-final on March 13, with the winner advancing to the tournament final and moving closer to securing qualification for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026. With strong home support in Hyderabad and momentum firmly on their side, India will be confident of continuing their impressive run.
If Navneet Kaur and the Indian attack can maintain the form displayed against Wales, the hosts will remain strong contenders to lift the tournament title and book their place at the 2026 Hockey World Cup.
