After losses to Vietnam (1–2) and Japan (0–11), India must now defeat Chinese Taipei to keep their hopes of progressing to the quarterfinals alive.

However, the challenge is significant. Chinese Taipei arrive with a compact defensive system, tactical discipline, and quick counter-attacking ability. For India, the key lies not only in determination but also in identifying and exploiting the structural weaknesses within Taipei’s defensive setup.

The Qualification Scenario

Heading into the final matchday, India sit bottom of Group C with zero points, while Japan lead with six points and both Chinese Taipei and Vietnam have three points each.

For India to qualify for the quarterfinals, two outcomes are necessary:

  1. India must defeat Chinese Taipei.
  2. Japan must defeat Vietnam in the other group match.

If those results occur, the group standings could see multiple teams tied on three points, bringing goal difference and head-to-head results into play. That means India may need to win by a convincing margin to maximize their chances.

Beyond the mathematical permutations, the bigger question is tactical: how can India break down Chinese Taipei’s defensive system?

Understanding Chinese Taipei’s Defensive Shape

Chinese Taipei are known for their structured defensive approach, often deploying a deep defensive line supported by wingbacks and compact midfielders. Their strategy revolves around crowding the area where the ball is being played, effectively creating an overload on that flank. This aggressive concentration on one side helps them suffocate opposition attacks but also creates a critical vulnerability: space on the opposite flank.

When multiple defenders converge around the ball carrier, the defensive structure shifts heavily toward that side. If the ball is switched quickly across the field, large areas can open up on the far side where defenders struggle to recover quickly. Japan exploited exactly this weakness during their match against Chinese Taipei. A late run from a midfielder, drifting into a wide position, stretched the defensive line and exposed space between defenders ultimately leading to a breakthrough goal.

For India, recognizing and exploiting this imbalance will be crucial.

The Key Vulnerable Zone: Wingback Centre Back Gap

Another notable weakness lies in the space between the wide centre-back and the wingback in Chinese Taipei’s defensive formation. When the wingback pushes forward to close down the ball carrier, the wide centre-back is forced to cover a large area behind.

This creates a channel that attackers can exploit with well-timed blindside runs. India have already shown the ability to capitalize on this type of space. Against Vietnam earlier in the tournament, Sanfida Nongrum made a similar run into the gap between defenders to score India’s goal.

Replicating that movement against Chinese Taipei could be one of India’s best attacking options.

India’s attacking strategy will likely revolve around width. Chinese Taipei tend to overload the side where the ball is being circulated, leaving the opposite wing exposed. Switching the play quickly from one side to the other can pull their defensive block out of shape.

This is where India’s fastest attackers, particularly Manisha Kalyan, become vital. Her pace and ability to attack defenders in open space could stretch the Taipei backline and create opportunities. If Chinese Taipei commit multiple defenders to stopping Manisha, it could open central spaces for midfield runners arriving late into the box.

While their defense is their primary strength, Chinese Taipei are also capable of launching quick counterattacks. Their attackers often rely on direct transitions, using pace on the wings to move the ball forward rapidly. However, these counterattacks sometimes appear disconnected from the midfield, leaving attackers isolated.

India must therefore maintain defensive discipline when committing players forward. Losing possession carelessly could expose them to dangerous counterattacks. A balanced approach pressing aggressively but maintaining defensive structure will be necessary.

Chinese Taipei employ a zonal marking system during set pieces, making it difficult for opponents to create chances through traditional crosses. One potential solution is to use short corners or indirect free-kick routines. By drawing defenders out of their zonal positions, India could disrupt the defensive structure and create openings inside the penalty area.

Movement and unpredictability will be key. Static crosses into a packed defensive line are unlikely to succeed.

Despite the heavy defeat against Japan, India showed encouraging attacking signs in the second half against Vietnam. Under head coach Amelia Valverde, the team has emphasized quicker transitions and aggressive attacking runs. India’s midfield remains one of the team’s strengths, capable of controlling possession and creating opportunities through quick passing combinations.

The challenge lies in translating possession into goals something that will be essential against a disciplined defensive side like Chinese Taipei.

Mental Strength Will Be Crucial

Beyond tactics, the psychological aspect of the match cannot be ignored. Recovering from an 11–0 defeat against Japan is not easy, but India must treat the match against Chinese Taipei as a fresh start. The Blue Tigresses still have a chance to qualify, and that opportunity alone should provide motivation.

Head coach Amelia Valverde has repeatedly emphasized the need to focus on the team’s strengths rather than dwelling on past results.

Chinese Taipei are organized, disciplined, and tactically intelligent. They defend in numbers and rarely concede space easily. However, their system is not without flaws. The heavy overload on one flank, the gap between wingback and centre-back, and the occasional disconnection in their attacks offer India clear tactical entry points.

If India can switch play quickly, exploit the wide channels, and time their attacking runs into those spaces, they can create opportunities. Execution will determine everything.

For the Blue Tigresses, the equation is simple: play with intensity, exploit the spaces, and take their chances. Ninety minutes in Sydney will decide whether India’s Asian Cup campaign ends in the group stage or continues into the knockout rounds.
