On the 6th of October, Hockey India announced the 18-member Indian junior men’s hockey team who are set to participate in the 12th edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia.

The Wall of India and the goalkeeping icon PR Sreejesh will lead the team as their head coach in Malaysia, with defender Amir Ali as their captain and Rohit serving as his deputy.

The Sultan of Johor Cup is an annual international under-21 men’s field hockey tournament held in Malaysia, with the first edition held in 2011 with India and Great Britain being the most successful teams.

Since 2011, India has appeared on 11 occasions except for the year 2016.

Out of the 11 occasions that they have appeared, India has won a total of three titles (2013, 2014, 2022), while being runner-up on four occasions (2012, 2015, 2018, 2019), came 3rd on two occasions (2017, 2023), and finished fourth on their first appearance in the tournament.

This edition of the tournament will feature eight teams instead of the customary six. India is placed in Pool B along with Malaysia, Pakistan, and New Zealand, while Pool A will consist of Germany, Australia, South Africa, and Great
Britain.

India’s campaign will begin against Japan on October 19, then they will face Great Britain on October 20.

Their next match-up will be against the hosts Malaysia on October 22, followed by a clash with Australia on October 23, and their last group stage match being against New Zealand on October 25.
