The Indian Grand Prix 1 athletics meet, held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday, saw some exciting performances but no athletes managed to achieve the qualifying standards for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Triple Jump and Long Jump Highlights:
● Praveen Chithravel, the bronze medalist at the Asian Games 2023, emerged victorious in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 17.12m. He edged out favorite Eldhose Paul (16.29m), the Commonwealth Games champion. However, Chithravel fell short of the Olympic qualification mark of 17.22m.
● Shaili Singh, the World U20 Championships silver medalist, bagged the gold medal in the women’s long jump with a jump of 6.52m on her first attempt. While impressive, it wasn’t enough to meet the Olympic standard of 6.86m. Her competitor, Nayana James (6.44m), who had beaten Singh last month, also fell short of the mark.
Other Victories and Notable Performances:
● Manu DP, with a throw of 81.91m, secured the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw. However, he couldn’t reach the Olympic qualification mark of 85.50m. It’s important to note that established throwers Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena, who have already qualified for Paris, were absent from the competition.
● In a much-anticipated return, sprinter Hima Das, cleared by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) last month, participated in the women’s 200m race. However, she was unable to finish the race due to pain.
● The men’s shot put competition was called off due to the absence of all three registered participants. Tajinderpal Singh Toor, whose personal best surpasses the Olympic qualification mark (21.50m), was among those missing.
