Gulveer Singh Continues Rise as India’s Distance Running Star with Stunning 13:03.93 in Los Angeles

Indian long-distance running witnessed another landmark moment on Saturday as Gulveer Singh delivered a sensational performance at the LA Track Fest 2026 in Los Angeles.
Competing against a stacked international field at the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet, Gulveer clocked an outstanding 13:03.93 in the men’s 5000m to finish second overall, recording the fastest outdoor performance of his career and the second-fastest time of his life. Only Habtom Samuel of New Mexico finished ahead of the Indian athlete, winning the race in 12:57.22. Gulveer, however, stayed composed throughout the race and held off several elite international runners to secure an impressive podium finish at one of the strongest distance meets of the season.
The performance further cemented Gulveer’s status as one of the finest middle and long-distance runners India has ever produced.
His timing of 13:03.93 now stands only behind his own Asian record of 12:59.77, which he achieved earlier in 2025. Importantly, it also improved his previous outdoor best of 13:11.82 set in 2024, underlining the consistency with which the Army athlete from Aligarh continues to push Indian distance running into uncharted territory.
The race itself was run at a fierce pace from the opening laps. With several international athletes targeting fast times and world ranking points, the field remained tightly packed for much of the race. Gulveer looked comfortable from the beginning, positioning himself intelligently among the front runners while avoiding unnecessary surges in the early stages.
As the pace intensified in the final kilometres, Gulveer showed remarkable composure and endurance. While several athletes began fading under pressure, the Indian star maintained rhythm and continued attacking the pace. His finishing kick ensured he crossed the line in second place, ahead of multiple established international runners from elite professional training groups.
The significance of the timing becomes even greater when viewed in the context of Asian athletics this season. Gulveer’s 13:03.93 currently places him among the fastest Asian runners of 2026 and further strengthens his position as India’s leading long-distance athlete. More importantly, it confirms that his Asian record performance earlier this year was no isolated breakthrough.
He is now producing world-class times consistently.
For Indian athletics, this represents a massive shift. Historically, Indian middle and long-distance runners struggled to compete regularly at elite global meets due to differences in race pace, exposure, and training environments. Even strong domestic performers often found it difficult to maintain rhythm against professional international fields. Gulveer is changing that narrative. Over the last two seasons, he has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to compete confidently against world-class opposition. Whether on the track or in championship races, he has shown a rare combination of tactical awareness, aerobic strength, and finishing ability.
His rise has also coincided with a growing improvement in Indian distance running standards overall. But even within that progress, Gulveer has emerged as a special talent.
The Army runner’s consistency has become his defining quality. While many athletes produce one standout performance before fading, Gulveer has continued improving year after year. His ability to repeatedly attack national and continental records reflects not only physical preparation but also a strong competitive mentality.
At LA Track Fest, that maturity was evident once again. Rather than getting carried away by the aggressive pace set by the leaders, Gulveer ran with discipline and confidence. He trusted his rhythm, managed his energy efficiently, and produced one of the strongest races of his career. The performance also highlights the growing importance of Indian athletes competing regularly in high-level international meets. Exposure to fast races against elite opposition is critical for improving standards, especially in distance running where pacing and race dynamics often determine final timings.
Gulveer has clearly benefited from those opportunities.
His latest run now adds another major achievement to what has already been an extraordinary phase in his career:
Asian record holder in the men’s 5000m
Fastest Indian outdoors over 5000m
One of Asia’s leading distance runners in 2026
Podium finisher at a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet

For Indian fans, perhaps the most exciting aspect is that Gulveer still appears to be improving. At 13:03.93, he is now knocking consistently on the door of sub-13-minute performances outdoors a barrier that would elevate him into an even more exclusive global category.
And based on his current form, that possibility no longer feels unrealistic. Indian athletics has produced iconic names in sprinting, throwing events, and jumping disciplines over the years. Now, Gulveer Singh is ensuring that Indian distance running is becoming part of that global conversation too.
And with every race, he continues proving that he belongs among the very best.
